Built Environment

Current Global built area 788,939 km2 +6.61%.pa Buildings/Infrastructure Area (km2)

The area of built environment including infrastructure has been growing at an increasing rate over the last two centuries starting 5,000 years ago, when impacts were almost zero. Now the built environment is destroying vast areas of nature, forests, nutrient rich food productive areas at an alarming rate.

By tracking the built environment surface area and the resultant carbon footprint the DAGS version of the ‘triple bottom line’, we able to start to see how effective measures as they are in the future implemented impacts on the state of health of the biosphere.

The first step of the process will be listing the key factors, linkages and key indicators that relate to this overall estimate of impact.
